Walker was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Walker is a native American born with African American roots. She is the child of Harvey Welker, a Native American father along with Julie Welker, an African American mother. She has both a Native American father as well as an African-American mother. Walker completed her education through The Germantown Friends School (Germantown area) in Philadelphia, graduating in 1994. Following her graduation from Harvard College in 1998, she attended Harvard College and earned her Bachelor of Arts. Welker has been married for over 20 years to John Hughes who is a famous marketing director at Merck Philadelphia. They have two kids. The couple began a relationship in 2014 when they began to date.
