Her roles in Legally Blonde (2001 and its sequel 2003) as well as in Sweet Home Alabama (2002 ) led to her being recognized more widely. The film was critically acclaimed and received the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing June Carter Cash, in the musical biopic Walk the Line. After a slump in her career with her only box-office hit was the romantic comedy Water for Elephants (2011), Witherspoon made a comeback with the production and role of Cheryl Strayed in the drama Wild (2014), which resulted in her being nominated for a second time for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Since then, she has been primarily involved in television productions and has appeared in a number of female-led literary adaptations. They include Big Little Lies, an HBO drama series (2017-2019), The Morning Show and an Apple TV+ drama series (2019-present) and Little Fires Everywhere (2020). The Primetime Emmy Award was won for Outstanding Limited Series in the first of these series. She also wrote and produced the adaptations to film Gone Girl (2014) and Where the Crawdads Sing (2022).Witherspoon also owns a clothing company, Draper James, and she is involved in both women's and children's advocacy organizations. She serves on the board of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) and was named Global Ambassador for Avon Products in 2007, serving as honorary chair of the charitable Avon Foundation dedicated to women's causes.
